Week 5 blog, week 6 class: EARTH, SUN, AND MOON

-What did you do in lab today? 1. In lab today we did a lot of introductions, which was really fun! We got to know one another even more which was really cool. What we did was got a slip of paper and created a scientist, rated how we felt about science, something about our scientist, and then a fun fact about ourselves. After introductions we talked more about what we are going to be doing in class and lecture moving forward. After that we started talking about our big questions for the day, these questions are posted and answered below.  -What was the big question? (all big questions are posted below)/ What did you learn in Thursday's discussion?  1. How the phases of the moon occur? - phases of the moon occur because of the moon and its orbit around the sun and earth. Different placements cause different moon phases.  2. what causes the seasons? - The earth's spin axis is tilted with respect to its orbital plane. This is what causes the seasons. When the earth...

❤This week in science we did a super cool and fun experiment! This week we talked about playground surfaces again and how those can be an external factor for how students react and play on playgrounds. We talked about how certain surfaces can make injuries more or less prone due to injury in students, which makes playgrounds more or less fun to play on!  ❤For this experiment we were given an egg and a mission. We were to create a surface that our egg could land on, without breaking, from a 1 meter drop. For a while we struggled with what materials to use. We went through 2 or 3 eggs before we found a surface type that worked for our egg!  ❤These are the different materials that were given to us to use to create our surface.  ❤Fail!  ❤These three pictures are from our last run of dropping the egg. We ended up finding out that the egg did not break when we dropped it onto the soft surface of tire chips and cling wrap. We then took this experiment further by dropp...

❤ This week in lab we got to do a lot of fun stuff, including an experiment! During the lecture portion of lab, we talking about motion and why things move, why objects that are in motion stay in motion, and what factors come into play. This lead us into our experiment for the week. This week, we had to create an experiment with a swing. My table group and I decided that we wanted to test weight and if it had a great affect on how our swing functioned. We decided that we wanted to create an experiment with four different parts, a swing with no weights, 1 weight, 2 weights, and 3 weights.  ❤ During this experiment, we found that the weight of the swing does not affect the way the swing swings. We found that with 0,1,2,and 3 washers, the swing still was swinging the same or within seconds of each swing. We tested the swings by timing one swing per trial. Ex: trial one= 1 swing, trial two= 1 swing, and trial 3= 1 swing. We also weighed each weight to see how much weight we were workin...

❤This week in science I missed lab because of a dentist appointment! My table group filled me in with what happened and sent me a few pictures from the lab.  ❤ In lecture on Thursday we learned about motion and how all of that works. We did a few break out rooms during lecture as well so we could talk with our peers about why/ how types of motion worked. One question that I liked a lot, that we started out class with, was a question on how someone on a longer slide will go faster than someone who is going down a short slide. I thought that was a great way to start class and getting us ready to think about motion. We also talked about friction, rider weight, and other factor that can play into how motion works. We did a lot of discussion on this topic in our breakout groups, we made graphs, and also used a jam board and a google form to get more info on motion.  ❤text book reading: - I learned a lot about motion this week from the textbook reading. I learned about force, ...
