Week 9

This week in science we did not do much. The majority of our time in lab this week, we went over the homework from last week and also played a game that taught us about natura selection.  First, we briefly over our homework of last week. This homework consisted of going over different appendixes and picking the one we found most interesting. We each summarized our own and then shared our ideas with the class. I have no questions in regard to the homework, I got a lot of clarity during our class discussion.  The next thing we did during lab time this week was play a game that taught us about natural selection in the wild. The game was actually very fun and we had a great time doing it! We even ended up playing an extra round of the game because it was so fun. Essentially,  the game consisted of a group of four or five. We each had a different utensil to use to scoop up our 'prey'. Our 'prey' was dried beans that were scattered across the table. When it was time to go...

Week 8

This week in science we learned many new things. This weeks focus was mostly on DNA,RNA, understanding mutations, traits, genes, and much more!  At the start of class we checked on our fast plants, our plants are growing really big and doing really well! After that, we talked as a whole group about our 5E model responses and collaborated with our answers. After this we shared our babies that we had made last week, we also talked about how our babies got these genes and presented a picture to our class.   After we discussed the homework, we talked about how DNA is structured and other components of DNA. Things that were discussed were the structure of DNA, how DNA, RNA, MRNA work together, transcriptions, and translations.  This was a good refresher on some information that I had prior knowledge on.  After we had discussed these different topics, we did different gene mutation simulations. These were fun to do because it was great to see how these different muta...

Week 7

This week in science we did something a little different than usual. This week in our lab we did DNA structures with candy and we made our own babies! Both of these activities were very fun and engaging in class. Beside the lab for this week, we also had a test in our lecture this week.      For our first activity this week, we did DNA spirals with candy! First we watched a video on how this activity replicated DNA spirals. The video explained to us how the gum drops represent the different DNA codes, G-C-A-T. A and T pair up, along with G and C. So, the different colors of gum drops represented these pairs. Then we used toothpicks and a twizzler to attach all the components together to create a replica of a DNA spiral with candy! This was really cool and a great way to learn about how each code pairs with one another. I think that this is also a great way to learn about how DNA works. This activity did not leave me with many questions, I thought it w...
