Week 7

This week in science we did something a little different than usual. This week in our lab we did DNA structures with candy and we made our own babies! Both of these activities were very fun and engaging in class. Beside the lab for this week, we also had a test in our lecture this week.

For our first activity this week, we did DNA spirals with candy! First we watched a video on how this activity replicated DNA spirals. The video explained to us how the gum drops represent the different DNA codes, G-C-A-T. A and T pair up, along with G and C. So, the different colors of gum drops represented these pairs. Then we used toothpicks and a twizzler to attach all the components together to create a replica of a DNA spiral with candy! This was really cool and a great way to learn about how each code pairs with one another. I think that this is also a great way to learn about how DNA works. This activity did not leave me with many questions, I thought it was a great activity overall.

Another activity that we did in class was making our own babies. This activity consisted of flipping a coin for each parent, to see what genes our child would receive. There was a possibility of homozygous or heterozygous genes due to the coin flip. My table partner and I took turns flipping a coin and figuring out what traits our child was going to have. I think this is a great activity to explain genes and different traits and how they are passed on. Our child ended up being a boy! We each drew our own photos of what we thought our son would look like from the description.

Overall, I think the activities this week were awesome. I think that I learned a lot and I had a blast doing with baby making activity. Again, there was not anything that I did not understand, I feel like I have a good grasp of the information that was presented to us this week.

  1. I also liked the DNA with candy activity because it was helpful to see a model and leanr more about it in a fun way. Your post looks great!
